Bringing Fresh Air Underground at Emaar Mall with a Retractable Skylight
Located in the heart of Istanbul, Emaar Square Mall features a unique food court positioned below ground level. To overcome the challenge of creating a bright and breathable environment in this enclosed space, Libart designed and installed a custom-engineered retractable skylight system.
The project features a ClearSky Large Opening Skylight System with insulated glass roof panels that seamlessly integrate with the architecture. The automatic retractable roof provides access to natural light and fresh air while meeting the structural demands of an underground application—including resistance to earthquake loads.
Thanks to Libart’s solution, the food court now transitions effortlessly between indoor and outdoor modes. When open, the skylight floods the space with daylight and creates a natural, open-air dining experience, even below ground. During cold or rainy weather, the retractable roof closes automatically to maintain a climate-controlled environment.
This transformation has redefined how a shopping mall can offer flexibility, comfort, and health-conscious design in all conditions. An underground smoking area and open-air lounge were also created, enhancing visitor satisfaction and dwell time.
Libart’s team provided full static engineering support, ensuring safety and stability in a complex setting. The result is a one-of-a-kind commercial space that blends design, engineering, and function—demonstrating the power of adaptive architecture.
